Dilantin Side Effects Lawsuit
dilantin, Phenytek by Mylan Laboratories, Bertek Pharmaceuticals, and Dilantin 125, Dilantin Kapseals Dilantin InfatabsPfizer. Phenytek, Phenytoin Sodium

What is Dilantin?

Dilantin (Phenytoin sodium) is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. It works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures.Dilantin (Phenytoin sodium) is prescribed to epileptics to manage temporal lobe seizures (a type of seizure caused by disease in the cortex of the temporal [side] lobe of the brain affecting smell, taste, sight, hearing, memory, and movement) and grand mal seizures (a type of seizure in which the individual experiences a sudden loss of consciousness immediately followed by generalized convulsions). Dilantin may also be used to prevent and treat seizures that can occur during and after neurosurgery (surgery of the brain and spinal cord).

Dilantin Side Effects

While most medications have side effects, Dilantin has serious side effects which are little known by most of the users and many in the medical community. Dilantin can cause a rare skin disorder called Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) in some Dilantin users.  SJS and TEN are both very serious side effects of Dilantin and can leave the victim horribly disfigured and maimed. Stevens Johnson Syndrome affects the mucous membranes and the skin, eventually resulting in the epidermis (the outer layers of skin) separating from the dermis (inner layers of skin). SJS is closely related to TENS (Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis), which affects the dermis / skin in the same way but can lead to the 100% separation of the epidermis.

Dilantin / Phenytoin

Phenytoin sodium has been marketed as Phenytek by Mylan Laboratories, Bertek Pharmaceuticals, and Dilantin; Australia also Dilantin Kapseals and Dilantin Infatabs in the USA, Eptoin by Abbott Group in India and as Epanutin in the UK and Israel, by Parke-Davis, now part of Pfizer. Other brand & generic names include Phenytek, Phenytoin Sodium and Prompt. Phenytoin may accumulate in the cerebral cortex over long periods of time, as well as causing atrophy of the cerebellum when administered at chronically high levels. Despite it being a common "first line of defense" in seizure cases, it also has some bad side effects as well.
